Potporrui

I played the french horn for several years, although I no longer own one. Sebald's The Rings of Saturn and Italo Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler are easily among my favorite books of all time. I am especially fanatical for Brandon Sanderson's writing. I'm a Libra and my spirit animal is an owl.

My favorite band of all time is the Chicago-based "improg" band named Umphrey's McGee. Umphrey's is a six-man band similar in formation to the Grateful Dead: two guitars, a bass, keys, drums, and percussion. Few bands have the improvisational skill that Umphrey's has, and this is supported by the incredible chemistry and communicative skills the sextet posesses. Although they do play extended jams, calling them a "jam band" doesn't do justice to their super-tight, ultra-precise brand of progressive rock. In today's conversation of bands like Phish, String Cheese Incident, moe., Bisco, et al., Umphrey's occupies a spot in the centrality of genre performance and technical musicianship. Their progtastic 2009 release, Mantis, marks a distinct shift from potentiality to rocking actuality.

Asterism

Asterism is my personal blog where most of my thoughts on writing, books, and the Internet intersect.

Explore the Temple

Explore the Temple is my humble blog about the "mystic art" of Masonry; the international brotherhood of men working together to live better lives.

Writing

I've been writing all my life, and I would like to have a space to put it. I feel that writing something just to stick it in a desk drawer is as productive as talking to a mirror. Check my Elfwood shelf for older work. I mean, really older.

Reading

I try to read good books often. Here is a link to my most recent reading lists, and any thoughts I might have had while reading them.

About Me

I read, write, blog, and whenever and wherever I can. I have a particular love for writing fantasy literature. I also love music of many genres and flavors, and I try to keep on top of the newest and greatest technologies.
